Description:
Variations in tree-ring structure from pith to bark of mature Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst. (L)) grown under contrasting climate conditions (warm-dry vs. cool-humid) in south-western Germany were investigated. Sample trees were from even-aged stands where no intensive silvicultural treatments had taken place. The cell number (CN), diameter (CD), lumen diameter (CL) and wall thickness (CW) were measured from stem cross-sections taken at breast height. A raw data chronology of each cell parameter was established for the whole annual ring (AR), earlywood (EW), latewood (LW), and transition wood (TW). The long-term trends of the cell parameters were generally non-linear, parameter-specific in AR and EW and similar over sites. Those in LW were site-specific and similar over cell parameters. The variation of the same parameter, expressed by the coefficient of variance (CV), tended to increase from EW towards LW and was clearly higher for CN than for other cell parameters of all tree-ring zones. Trees from the warm-dry site had more LW cells and substantially thicker CW, whereas those from the cool-humid site had larger EW cells. These observed differences are likely due to the hydraulic adaptation mechanisms of trees to different site conditions.
Climate sensitivity of European larch in the French Maritime Alps: An analysis of a millennial-long tree-ring chronology

A better understanding of past climate variations is the key for improved predictions of future climate. Considering the last millennium, tree-ring data are major proxies in climate reconstructions. They provide annually resolved information often combined with considerable temporal length and have moreover a wide geographical distribution. A site with very old trees is found in the French Maritime Alps. At its Mediterranean margin, these larches are able to reach an age of up to 1000 years probably belonging to the oldest larches of Europe. They are situated in a region very vulnerable to climate change since extended heat waves and changed precipitation pattern seem to be already established in the Mediterranean. Therefore, this area is of special climatological interest. Based on tree-ring width chronologies from high-elevation sites in this region, the author Thomas Neuenschwander analyzes growth trends and climate sensitivity of larch (Larix decidua Mill.) and assesses their potential for long-term climate reconstructions for the Mediterranean. In addition to climate factors, other environmental factors affecting tree growth are discussed, e.g. larch budmoth outbreaks.
21st Century Veterans Health: Cold Injury Diagnosis and Management, Long-Term Effects, Veterans Administration Independent Study Course (Ring-bound)

This unique ring-bound book provides a reproduction of the Veterans Administration (VA) Independent Study Course on Cold Injury Diagnosis and Management, released in March 2002 as part of the Veterans Health Initiative. “The purpose of this self-study program is to provide information to VA staff a about cold injuries. In particular, this program will provide information on: The effects of cold injuries and the circumstances of their occurrence in the veteran population; revision and expansion of evaluation criteria for cold injury in the rating schedule; cold injury examination protocol; and signs and symptoms associated with post cold injury medical sequelae and treatment recommendations. Many VA physicians have had relatively little exposure to cold injury in their daily practices. However, extreme cold conditions have been a powerful enemy of American troops from Valley Forge to Korea. Cold continues to complicate training exercises and may well figure in future conflicts. The Veterans Health Administration wants to assure that veterans with cold injury receive high quality examinations and follow-up care. Upon completing the this self study program, participants should be able to: describe conditions leading to cold injuries; describe differences between freezing and non-freezing cold injuries; delineate the signs and symptoms of acute cold injury; delineate the signs and symptoms of long term sequelae of cold injuries; identify key points to be included in the history of someone with reported cold injury; understand appropriate examination and treatment protocols for patients with long term sequelae of cold injury; and apply appropriate objective criteria to help in the adjudication of claims process. As a result of this program, clinicians should be able to conduct a more comprehensive examination and assessment of patients through a better understanding of the long-term sequelae of cold injuries and to the development of an appropriate management and follow
